A picture of JohnAs a writer and consultant specializing in volunteerism, nonprofit management and executive transition issues, John has worked with a variety of organizations and has served as a trainer and keynote speaker for local, national and international audiences.  Clients have included Washington DC based Points of Light Foundation, Silicon Valley employer Aspect Communications, Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Nebraska Governor’s Conference on Community Service.  In April 2002 he was honored to be an invited presenter at the 1st Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Volunteer Administration in Busan, Korea and in March, 2005 he traveled for the US State Department and presented on volunteerism throughout Argentina.

A previous resident of Arizona and a graduate of Arizona State University, John worked as the Volunteer Program Manager for the Scottsdale Center for the Arts and as Volunteer Coordinator for the City of Tempe. In 1993 he moved to California to serve as Director of Volunteer Resources for ARIS, the local AIDS service organization of Santa Clara County.  John was also very involved with the Association for Volunteer Administration (AVA) and held several regional and national leadership positions for this organization dedicated to promoting the profession of volunteer administration.

John also served as the Executive Director of the Volunteer Exchange of Santa Clara County. Under John’s direction, this Volunteer Center won numerous local and national awards for its innovative programs designed to support volunteerism at over 675 nonprofit and public agencies throughout the Silicon Valley region of Northern California.  John served as a member of the faculty for San Jose State University’s Continuing Education Program in Nonprofit Management for over ten years and is currently an instructor for CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in San Francisco. 

John has published on the topics of volunteer retention and recruitment, and is a contributor to Susan Ellis’s e-volunteerism and Everyone Ready series of training guides on volunteer management for national organization. He is the co-author of “Volunteers for the City: A How-To Manual for Developing or Enhancing Municipal Volunteer Programs.”  His writing (both nonfiction and fiction) has appeared in a variety of publications including Genre, Plays: The Drama Magazine for Young People, Wag Magazine, Volunteer Management Report and Advocate Online.

In addition to a busy training and consulting schedule, John served as the Interim Executive Director for the Mothers’ Milk Bank in San Jose, the Diabetes Society of Santa Clara Valley, Rebuilding Together Silicon Valley, and Positive Resource Center in San Francisco.  He has worked for Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS) in San Francisco since 2004 and serves as the organization’s President/CEO. www.pawssf.org
